Robert Hitch Village Redevelopment

The cornerstone of the Choice Neighborhoods Initative Transformation Plan for the East Savannah Gateway is the redevelopment of Robert Hitch Village. The property, which was demolished in 2010, sits adjacent to Fred Wessels Homes, with frontage to E. President Street (the northern boundary of the East Savannah Gateway).The redevelopment of the site as a mixed-income, mixed-finance community will include more than 600 homes, creating a vibrant neighborhood that will transform not only the targeted public housing units, but the surrounding Wheaton Street Corridor. Although the units have been demolished, this site presents substantial development challenges, since more than half of the site is located in a 100-year flood plain. Discussion of options to ameliorate this issue are ongoing with key planning partners.

The Master Developer of the Hitch property is The Hunt Group and The Communities Group (TCG) will continue working with the community and the CNI partners to refine plans for this site—which needs to integrate closely with neighboring developments (Fred Wessels Homes, President Square, and the Wheaton Street Corridor).
